INTRODUCTION
Together we are building a culture of positive values for social change. We know that in order to raise empathetic global citizens and future leaders, we need to build a foundation for children through unique hands-on experiences they can learn from and carry through adulthood.
Mission Life has developed a service-learning school-based program for elementary and secondary school students that studies the culture of
an impoverished nation and it will build skills on the subjects of empathy, compassion, generosity, love, forgiveness, diversity and inclusion.
The program aims to address unmet human, educational, environmental, or public safety needs that will provide a direct benefit to these communities by reducing violence in schools, and inspiring generosity
in the new generations of leaders.
TYPOLOGY & STYLE OF SERVICE LEARNING
Change One Service Learning models the foundation of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) which is defined as "a transformative, lifelong pursuit that involves both curricular learning and practical experience to shape a mindset (teachings & knowledge), and the heart (Christian values), to care for humanity and the planet, and to equip individuals with global competence to undertake responsible actions aimed at forging more just, peaceful, secure, sustainable, tolerant and inclusive societies.”
Like Global citizenship education, Mission Life’s “Change One” focuses on
three conceptual dimensions:
Cognitive – learners’ acquisition of knowledge, skills, understanding, and critical thinking (of Values and principles for transformational leaders).
Socio-emotional & Spiritual – learners’ sense of belonging to common humanity, sharing values and responsibilities, empathy, solidarity, and respect differences for differences and diversity.
Behavioral – empowers learners to act responsibly at local, national, and global levels for a more peaceful and sustainable world.
INTERVENTION & ACTIVITIES
Mission Life’s intervention will create change to "equally benefit the provider and the recipient of the service as well as to ensure equal focus on both the service being provided and the learning that is occurring." As part of the teachings, students will participate in already developed hands-on activities to interact (or teach-back) with the sponsored child in another country by the classroom. Other activities include:
- Introduction presentation of the program, center and country, and children for sponsorship
- iLead leadership values program curriculum
- Monthly Activities (Connecting students with the sponsored child via video)
- Presentation of fundraising product, culture, and change/impact
- Sponsors tutor younger students to learn values and leadership skills
- Letter-writing exchange between students in the U.S. and countries
- Provide students with tools to discover talents and values of leadership that will help them realize their mission in life
